Emerson GM527 reviews from buyers :-
“Got this karaoke player for my daughter for her birthday. It arrived the very next day!! Shipping was free too. It has seen a lot of use already and we’ve only had it a month. The kids love it, and the adults too! The microphones work well, I am sure there are better ones, but for our home purposes, they are great! Easily portable.”
“Mic’s were a little cheesey, bought some quality ones , much better, not vert loud so you need a amp and speakers if you are using in a big area. I set this up for a family reunion, with a surround sound system and 13″ TV for the veiwing, after a bit of fine tuning it sounded as good as the professional systems, had great fun!”
One more buyer mentioned:
“We bought this for my daughter’s 6 year old birthday. The disc play was mediocre and like other people have mentioned it had an especially hard time using the karaoke mics and the DVD at the same time. I think that maybe the vibrations from the kids’ voices were causing the DVD to stop tracking or possibly there is a built in AGC (Automatic Gain Control) circuit. At any rate as soon as they would sing very loud the music would cut out completely.
I quickly came up with a remedy that made the whole system worth while. My solution was to use the memory slots. I first used the USB slot until my children snapped the thumb drive in half. I then grabbed an old 2 gig SD card from an old camera and loaded with Karaoke videos. Nearly every popular song has a karaoke video on Youtube. Using Download helper or Realaudio you can grab those “flv” videos. Then convert them to AVI and they play natively on the karaoke machine via the memory slot. I added just over a gig of videos ranging from classic rock to Sesame Street and other children’s music totaling to 95 songs and I still have nearly half the SD card to go. I am guessing we could probably load as many as 170-180 AVI songs on the 2-gig SD card.
Using the SD card there is no worry about the kids breaking the video-screen door trying to load the discs into the player. I really don’t like the way the discs load but since we never really open the door any more it is not a problem.
I can confirm the switches and pots are pretty chintzy but it seems most real hardware went out with the 90s so I guess you get what you get.
The audio is missing power in my mind but for my kids it is somewhat of a plus since their voices are pretty loud to begin with. However my daughter is working on a song for a talent show and I know I will need to daisy chain the machine through one of my regular PA systems if I want people to hear her.
While I was contemplating a 3-star rating I am going to issue a 4-star rating only because I have found value in the way we are currently using this machine. 95 songs equals hours of entertainment for a six year old. Now when I hear her singing Magic Man by Heart or Tears in Heaven at the top of her lungs it gives me a chuckle.”
